Zorita Burlesque for July

Zorita burlesque doesn't exactly scream patriotism unless your patriotic to the free spirited, artistic Bohemian lifestyle. I think it's romantic in an 19th century kind of way.

Zorita burlesque from Lovechild Boudior
Zorita was a 1940's burlesque dancer famous for her erotic snake strip teases but the miss July dress promises to have a little more purity to her look.

Always on the lookout for something different for the paper couture projects, July's dress will be anything but boring as we head into Independence Day.

Sneak Peak: Sailor Girl

I've noticed that the design of some of the paper couture dresses seems to come together more quickly and easily than others. Sailor girl would be one of them.

I just adore the look of this dress style and she's going to make a most perfect Miss June. The only question now is what color paper I'll use and what pattern will work best. Do you love it?

Pink Roses Floral Paper

Interested in finding out more about that sweet rose patterned paper I used for the sweet lolita dress? Here it is! I altered the color of the rose pattern to be lighter and more peachy than it actually is.

The pink gingham pattern appears on the other side of the roses. I found it at my local craft store but you might be able to order directly. See copyright notice below for a link.

A Sailor Dress for June

Sailor just sounded like such a perfect subject as we head into boating season and this stylish Hell Bunny dress certainly caught my eye even if I do have to reach to make the sailor connection to it.

Dress

Isn't it amazing what comes up in searches sometimes?! Double skirt + polka dots = total bliss.  I may need to "sailorize" this just a little but I'll keep the hows of that a surprise for now.

I love these dresses! These are fun, flirty and absolutely adorable save whatever that is wrapped around the bust line. Whatever, ya know? I'll make it work. (tee hee :)

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Literally "the Fifth of May," Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. In 1861, France sent a massive army to invade Mexico, as they wanted to collect on some war debts. The French army was much larger, better trained and equipped than the Mexicans struggling to defend the road to Mexico City.

It rolled through Mexico until it reached Puebla, where the Mexicans made a valiant stand, and, against all logic, won a huge victory. It was short-lived, as the French army regrouped and continued; eventually taking Mexico City, but the euphoria of an unlikely victory against overwhelming odds is remembered every May fifth.

The Wacky Paper Dress

I previously described this as wacky and Tim Burton-ish but what else do I call a paper dress that displays such an intriguing combination of patterns?
wacky paper dress art - front
I almost have a love hate relationship going on with this because while I love the style I have not entirely warmed up to the idea of all the pattern. Why do I resist when the combination is so fantastic?
wacky paper dress art - back
Perhaps I resist because the combination IS so fantastic that I feel like Alice slipping down the rabbit hole. Welp! We may as well settle in for the ride because this may not be the last you'll see of this style.

Happy May Day!

On May 1, 1561, King Charles IX of France received a lily of the valley as a lucky charm and decided to offer a lily of the valley each year to the ladies of the court. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became custom to give a sprig of lily of the valley, a symbol of springtime, on May 1.

May Day was also celebrated by some early European settlers of the American continent. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These are small baskets usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. The giver rings the bell and runs away.
